Getting the dose right with shilajit resin is simpler than it might first appear. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs with precise dosing requirements, shilajit’s effects are gradual and nutritional in character β which means the ideal dose is a range rather than a fixed number, and finding your personal optimum is a straightforward process.
This page covers recommended dosage ranges, what clinical studies have used, how to adjust based on your goals, and signs that you may be taking too much or too little.
For general usage guidance including preparation methods, see our how to use shilajit page. For the product itself, see our Himalayan Shilajit Resin page.
General Recommended Dosage Range
The standard recommended dosage range for authentic shilajit resin is 300β500 mg per day for general wellness purposes. This range reflects both traditional Ayurvedic guidance and the doses used in modern clinical research.
For reference: 300 mg is approximately the size of a small pea or a single grain of rice. Because shilajit resin is dense, a small physical amount represents a meaningful nutritional dose. Avoid judging dose size by visual impression β what looks like a tiny amount is typically the correct serving.
What Clinical Studies Have Used
Several key human clinical trials provide direct guidance on dosage:
- Pandit et al. (2016) β testosterone study:Β 250 mg twice daily (500 mg/day total) for 90 days in men aged 45β55. Statistically significant improvements in testosterone and DHEA observed. No adverse effects reported.
- Biswas et al. (2010) β sperm quality study:Β 100 mg twice daily (200 mg/day total) for 90 days. Improvements in sperm count, motility, and morphology observed.
- Keller et al. (2019) β physical performance study:Β 500 mg/day for 8 weeks. Improvements in maximal muscular strength and recovery noted.
- Winkler and Ghosh (2018) β metabolic health pilot:Β 250 mg twice daily (500 mg/day total). Improvements in glucose response and gut permeability markers observed.
The range across these studies β 200 to 500 mg per day β reflects the typical effective window for most applications. No studies have demonstrated additional benefit beyond 500 mg/day for standard wellness goals.
Dosage by Goal
General Wellness, Mineral Nutrition, and Energy Support
300 mg once daily is an appropriate and sustainable starting dose. This aligns with the lower end of clinical research dosing and is sufficient to provide meaningful mineral delivery and the nutritional benefits of consistent fulvic acid intake.
Testosterone and Male Vitality Support
Based on the Pandit et al. study, 250 mg twice daily (morning and early afternoon) for a minimum of 90 days represents the evidence-based approach. The twice-daily dosing schedule maintains more consistent serum levels of bioactive compounds compared to a single daily dose.
Physical Performance and Recovery
The Keller et al. study used 500 mg once daily. For athletes or those engaged in intense physical training, this higher single dose or a split 250 mg twice-daily schedule both represent reasonable approaches.
Starting Protocol: How to Begin
We recommend starting conservatively and building up:
- Week 1β2:Β 200β300 mg once daily in the morning. Allows your digestive system to acclimate.
- Week 3β4:Β Increase to 300β500 mg once daily if well tolerated and desired.
- Month 2 onwards:Β Adjust to twice-daily dosing (150β250 mg morning and midday) if targeting specific goals. Maintain for a minimum of 90 days to evaluate effects.
Is There a Maximum Dose?
There is no established upper tolerable limit for shilajit in peer-reviewed literature. However, doses above 1000 mg/day have not been studied in controlled settings and offer no demonstrated additional benefit. Higher doses are also wasteful from a cost perspective. There is no research rationale for exceeding 500β600 mg/day for typical wellness purposes.
Very high doses of heavy-metal-contaminated shilajit could theoretically cause issues β which is precisely why using a tested, purified product from a reputable source matters. Our product’s heavy metal compliance is verified by third-party testing. See our research and testing page for documentation.
Signs of Too Little vs. Enough
Because shilajit’s effects are cumulative, the indicators of whether dosing is appropriate appear over weeks rather than hours. Signs that you are likely at an appropriate dose after 4β6 weeks of consistent use include gradual improvements in sustained energy, reduced afternoon fatigue, and general sense of physical resilience. Signs that the dose may be insufficient include noticing no change after 6β8 weeks of consistent daily use β in which case, increasing to the upper range (500 mg/day) is a reasonable next step before concluding the product is not working.
